Alzheimer's is a disease that does not need to happen. It is a preventable and studies show it can be reversible. It is even called Type 3 Diabetes, let’s think about that connection for a moment...
Top causes are medication, lack of sleep, diet & nutrition/diabetes and sedentary lifestyle.
Medications
The average 65 year old is taking on average 13 medications. The side effects of too many medications are symptoms of confusion and memory loss. If you think about it, a healthy person taking that amount of medication would show Alzheimer symptoms. So first review if the amount of medications given are necessary!
Beware of statins as they lower necessary cholesterol (need good cholesteral for brain health) & deplete nutrients. Current studies indicate that Alzheimer drugs are not working so please do further research.
Lack of Sleep
Get more sleep - 6.5 - 8 hours. Without sleep, hormones that regulate blood sugar can not function optimally. So budget time for sleep.
Diet & Nutrition/Diabetes
Alzheimer's is called Type III diabetes, insulin resistance of the brain. High blood sugar is a top cause. 50% of Alzheimer is preventable by lowering blood sugar - so stop eating sugar and just go low glycemic! Instead...
Add healthy fats, the brain is made 70% fat. Avocado, coconut oil, nuts, fish oil, salmon.
Add pre-biotics (onion, garlic, mushrooms), probiotics and fermented foods (sauerkraut).
Add supplements: Vitamin D, CoQ10, B Complex, Lingzhi
Sedentary Lifestyle
Exercise turns on brain cells. So let’s move more!
Stress
Stress is inflammation. It causes havoc to the hormonal system increasing cortisol levels going back to high blood sugar talked about in the Diet &n Nutrition|Diabetes section.
Add breathing - Breathing stimulates the Vagas nerve for the brain to healing and connecting nervous system. Stimulate hippocampus and stimulate the vagas nerve.
Notes on Brain Regeneration
The growth of new neurons in an adult, mammalian brain was first seen in 1992, the adult brain is capable of growing new neurons.
The brain is now considered to be resilient, pliable - plastic. The term neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the brain to “rewire” itself through practice of a desired skill. It is the combination of new cells and new learning that creates this magic.
Just like the muscles of the body, when the brain is well-nourished and stimulated through proper exercise, it heals and grows. And with proper care and feeding, this amazing brain regeneration can occur throughout life.
Physical exercise increases the blood flow to the brain, delivering a boost of fresh oxygen and glucose to hungry brain cells. Exercise is believed to stimulate hippocampal neurogenesis: new cell growth in the region of the brain associated with long-term memory and emotions. Healthy cell growth in this region is important to the aging brain, and believed to help prevent cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
